You don’t have to ask far or wide to learn that ModCloth is one of the best stores for buying cute, eclectic, individual clothing and decor that can suit any outgoing style. The uniqueness of what the company offers has contributed to their success in huge ways, but that has also made it difficult to find shopping experiences that are just like it. After all, if Modcloth is the sole company occupying a rather lucrative niche, where can people go when they want to find something similar?
If you’ve ever found yourself on the hunt for something like ModCloth but is still a little bit different in important ways, read on for some important details and suggestions. It might just allow you to make some great changes to your shopping habits and goals!
- There are quite a few different things that are appealing about ModCloth.
- We’re talking about their product line, of course, but also the shopping experience presented by this little company.
- It’s a tried-and-true underdog story with humble beginnings, and the clothing sold by ModCloth somehow reflects this perfectly.
- It’s clothing designed for the individual, rather than a trend, and that’s a hard thing for competitors to emulate.
That has made ModCloth something of a truly unique experience for consumers, and the store’s customer base has only grown because of it. So too have they been able to expand their product lines. Click through to the site, and you’ll quickly see what we mean. What began as a meager business operation in a college dorm has become one of the biggest names in eCommerce fashion shopping.
That doesn’t mean you’re entirely out of hope, however. We did promise to give you 10 of the best shops like ModCloth, and that’s exactly what we intend to do.
You’re not just going to find the same types of products in these stores—that would make for a rather boring list, no? Instead, we’ve focused on finding similar products and similar shopping experiences. Since ModCloth is such a personable experience for its customers, we’ve focused on finding companies that offer a similar experience based on like-minded philosophies. Those stores that rose up from their beginning as a small operation are particularly conducive to this.
10 Stores Like ModCloth
Below, we’re going to present our recommendations in no particular order. They’re not ranked, simply because that wouldn’t suit the type of argument we’re trying to make. These aren’t stores that mimic or capitalize off of ModCloth’s success. They’re each a success in their own right, deserving of your attention for a diverse number of reasons.
Fancy feeling like you’ve stepped back into the 1980s? We’re not sure where the cutoff point is, exactly, for something to be “vintage.” But if it includes this amazing decade, then the Asos clothing and product lineup definitely qualifies.
Whether you’re looking for something grunge, punk, gaudy, poofy, or otherwise definitively “80s,” this should be one of the first places that you stop to shop. After ModCloth, of course…
It might seem weird to recommend such a diversified retail company in comparison to ModCloth, which is rather specialized. However, many of Urban Outfitters’ clothing trends have been hitting that “vintage” mark for quite a few years, and while they might not be getting bullseye after bullseye like the star of this article, they’re reliable in their success.
You’ll find men’s and women’s clothing in abundance, and the sizing accuracy of Urban Outfitters’ products has received quite a bit of accolade from happy customers.
What’s in a name? Quite a lot, apparently. The overall aesthetic and appeal of Forever 21 does exude a youthful charm and energy that’s difficult to find elsewhere. In this way, it’s similar to ModCloth. And though it might not have the same penchant and focus on vintage clothing as that company, the style that it does embrace allows it to stand apart.
I just wish I would have looked this great, at 21.
The prices are great, too. Just as with ModCloth, you’re going to find women’s and men’s clothing, as well as a plethora of other product types that mesh well with the overall vibe offered by the store.
Okay, I definitely realize that we’re stepping things up with regard to price when we bring Kate Spade into the mix. However, that’s not a reason to exclude one of the best places to shop for clothing, accessories, and other fashionable items.
Even checking out the newest seasonal arrivals to the store, you can see the ways that “vintage” is embraced. It’s exceptionally well-made clothing, too, which should be expected when the prices are marked as high as Kate Spade products tend to be.
Quite a few of the suggestions in this list sell men’s and women’s clothing, but we’re going to break that chain in recommending Charlotte Russe. Though the store certainly exudes a classy, vintage aesthetic, it aims that style directly at women shoppers.
That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. When a company specializes, the products they offer only tend to get better as a result. Whether you’re shopping at a local Charlotte Russe retail location or through their online store, we think that you’ll agree—vintage clothing has no difficulty fitting in with modern styles in clothing design.
We’ve already demonstrated how well the name of a store can represent everything that it offers, and Shoptiques is no different. this company exudes an old-timey fashion sense in the best way that it can.
Women’s clothing is front and center at Shoptiques, and the product lineup changes predictably with the seasonal fashions. Right now, you’re going to find cute, casual dresses right alongside professional attire that is both feminine and powerful—perfect for any workplace, or for those days when you just want everyone to know what a classic badass you are.
In terms of humble beginnings, Nasty Gal almost measures up to ModCloth. While the latter began in a dormitory, Nasty Gal got its start as a company by way of one person in an apartment; Sophia Amoruso had an eBay account and an eye for tasteful, appealing vintage clothing. As the popularity of that account grew and expanded, the company eventually blossomed into the store that you see, today.
Nast Gal doesn’t exactly focus on vintage clothing, but it does offer quite a great selection of it. And all of those styles meld perfectly well with modern trends, too. You’ll never have to worry about clothing feeling “old.” Nasty Gal is, ironically, always classy.
Stop Staring is all about vintage and retro, perhaps even more so than ModCloth. It’s not quite as hip or trendy as some of the other options on this list, but we won’t hold those qualities against it. There is something chic and glamorous about how very forward all of the outfits and styles are, at Stop Staring, and we think that you’ll agree once you check it out.
The company is all about independent spirit, and still very much encompasses the original vision of the lead designer—Alicia Estrada.
We personally love the fact that many of the most prominent, individualistic retailers are choosing a presentation of their products that thoroughly empower women. Rose Gal is also aboard that particular trend and doesn’t shy away from the fact that vintage clothing can be cute and powerful at the same time. What’s especially cool about this, with Rose Gal? The fact that they sell men’s clothing, too and the overall image of their business is pitch-perfect for it.
Femininity is the clear focus of Rose Gal’s presentation and advertising, but all of the clothing offered here is stellar. It feels both as if it were plucked from a decade or two prior, but doesn’t lose any of the modern edge that allows it to fit in with other, more contemporary stylings.
What’s not to love about Lulu’s? We’ve written about it on Digital Recourse before, and have waxed poetic about how unique and appealing the various clothing and styles are that the company offers.
To call it “vintage” or “retro” is almost an understatement since it’s currently a major aim of Lulu’s fashion presentation. Even the online store itself is presented in a calm, appealing sepia tone representative of this style. Many customers are pleased with the prices offered for Lulu’s clothing as well, finding it very reasonable for high-quality clothing.
Of course, this is only a list of 10 stores. There are probably quite a few others out there that embrace the grassroots feeling that is so enjoyable about ModCloth, and even more that are focused on offering a vintage style at affordable prices. However, these are our favorites, and after you check out the stores featured above, we feel like they could be your favorites, too.
These 10 stores are “just like” ModCloth in the sense that they offer a unique shopping experience and a product lineup that allows shoppers to feel like individuals, at home in their own fashion preferences.
