Sandbox games are becoming increasingly popular, and it really isn’t hard to see why. When you think of sandbox you might think immediately about Minecraft, but there are way more great sandbox games than Minecraft. Check out this article to see the top 10 sandbox games like Minecraft.
What is a sandbox game?
An important question to answer is what a sandbox game is. A sandbox game is a game that allows you to roam the entire map and actually make changes to the game world. Think of this as a game where you can choose what missions you do, unlike a linear game, where you have no choice but to do the mission at hand. Think of a sandbox game as being an open world type game.
Minecraft is a sandbox game because you can do whatever you want and build whatever you want. There is no real objective, but most players set out with the intention to make diamond armor and tools.
Now that you know what a sandbox game is, let’s go over some awesome sandbox games.
Top 10 Sandbox Games
1. Garry’s Mod
You can get Garry’s Mod on Steam here for $10.
Garry’s Mod, or Gmod for short, is pretty much the ultimate sandbox game. Gmod used to be a mod for the very popular game Half-Life 2, and actually became its own standalone game where you can literally BS around and do whatever you want. There is a true sandbox game mode where you can play around with different props and NPC characters, and spawn stuff in and make things. There are also a bunch of other game modes including Prop Hunt, Death Run, Hide and Seek, Trouble in Terrorist Town, and many other game modes. Like I said, if you like sandbox games you will want to check out Gmod.
2. Grand Theft Auto V
Now any gamer has, at the very least, heard about GTA V. GTA V came out in 2013 and has been massively popular since. This is actually one of the most popular games ever released, and is quite possibly one of the funnest games out there. GTA has a huge map that you can explore, and you can use any vehicle you want to explore everything. You can do different missions and choose which ones you don’t want to do. You can also customize your vehicles and your weapons however you want. You can also buy properties to make you money and to store your cars and trucks. Overall this is a great game to play and is a must play for any gamer.
3.Ghost Recon Wildlands
This game has quickly landed a spot on my top 10 favorite games. This game was on March 7, 2017 and is a total open world game where you are tasked with taking down a cartel and for most of the missions you decide how to go about finishing the quest, You can be stealthy, tactical, can use a sniper rifle or you can even use a shotgun and blast bad guys in oblivion. Point is, YOU decide how to go about completing a mission. Now there are some downfalls, the game can get very repetitive but I truly enjoy the game. Each part of the map is different and has a different atmosphere, and you can blow things up. C’mon, it is definitely worth a shot by any fan of shooting games.
4. Kerbal Space Program
This is a silly game where you have to build a space craft to explore space, but if you don’t build your craft properly then you might blow up. There are different modes, but they have a mode that is dedicated to sandbox. In sandbox mode you can build whatever you want and totally goof around with whatever you want. The game has great physics and is a lot of full to play. There is a science mode where you perform experiments and try things out in space. Finally, the career mode combines everything together and also adds in crew management and other stuff like that. If you like anything to do with space, check out KSP.
5. Arma 3
Arma 3 is basically a massive sandbox focused on the military, sort of similar to Ghost Recon Wildlands. It can be played either single player or multiplayer and there are bunch of different weapons and vehicles that you can obtain. You can follow the story mode, kill other players on multiplayer, or just playing around and doing nothing. Arma is also extremely customizable and was meant to be modded, so you can always find really awesome mods for the game. If you like military games, then check out Arma 3.
6. The Sims 4
So The Sims isn’t quite like the other sandbox games on this list, but it is still somewhat a sandbox type game. You make your own characters and decide what happens with their lives, like making them fall in love and have babies, all that sort of fun stuff. The game is very silly and is fun to play in your downtime. You can also build their houses and create your own little Sim town. If you like the building and crafting aspect of Minecraft, you will probably really enjoy The Sims 4 (can be found here).
In Hitman you play as a… hitman. You are an assassin and are tasked to take out certain bad guys throughout the world. You can play in the United States, France, Japan, Italy, and some other countries where you get to kill people in different and creative ways. The maps are huge and you get to explore it all while doing different hits, which is pretty dang fun. You also get to create your own hits and contracts. The game is focused on stealth, so running in, guns blazing, isn’t the best way to go about getting the job done. If you enjoy stealth games, and want to try something a little different, check out Hitman.
Rust is an extremely fun multiplayer survival game where you can play by yourself or with a group of friends. This game has a massive map where you have to survive the wilderness and the other players. Rust is a genuine sandbox game, there is no set objective, but you do need to gather food, build a shelter, and find water to survive. Often times players will form groups, make bases, and then go attack other groups to get their supplies. While it is maddening to be on the receiving end of those raids, it is also fun actually going in and attacking other players.
Now many players you come across will try to kill you for no reason, so if you decide to play you need to watch out for jackasses who enjoy killing players for no reason. If you are a new player I recommend sticking with friends or other friendly players so you aren’t constantly dying at every second.
Skyrim is an extremely popular open world game where you come across dragons and fantasy stuff… and awesome chickens. There are spells, weapons, and some perks that you get along the way. Your character is on a mission to kill Alduin, a dragon who is supposed to end the world. Then quest to get there is really fun, and you make a lot of cool allies and explore a bunch of different places. This game will actually be released for the new Nintendo Switch coming later in 2017, but no date is set.
10. Fallout 4
Fallout 4 is my favorite video game, and it is extremely fun. You play as the sole survivor of Vault 111 (after a nuclear war) and try to save your son who is somewhere in Boston. The map for Fallout 4 is massive and you can spend hours and hours just exploring different areas without even doing the main mission. You come across people who can accompany you on your journey, and can even romance some of them so you’re never alone in the new world. Fallout 4 takes place almost a decade after the events of Fallout 3, which is another great open world sandbox game. I am biased, but if you enjoy apocalyptic things you will love not just Fallout 4, but all of the Fallout game series.
Fallout 4 also features a settlement crafting feature where you can build up your own settlements and help survivors you come across along the way. The crafting is similar to Minecraft where you can craft any kind of shelter you want. You will need materials and supplies to craft whatever shelters and buildings you make, so you need to scavenge salvage materials and find scrap.
There y’all have it, the top 10 sandbox games like Minecraft. some of the games on this list even have a crafting element similar to Minecraft where you can build whatever you want. You can explore the map on all 10 of these games on the list, and on all of these games you can decide what missions you do and don’t do. You also decide how you want to go about and do those missions.
