Kodi, or originally named Xbox Media Center, is a multimedia software that is extremely versatile and can be used on almost every operating system. It is free and open-source, which means anyone is allowed to use, copy, and change the software in any way. In fact, the code is openly shared so that people are encouraged to improve the design of the software. This is an interesting concept that you don’t see very often, as the developer of this is a nonprofit. Once you download the Kodi software, you are able to play and view most streaming media, such as videos, music, podcasts, and videos from the internet.
We have written several articles explaining Kodi, but none touching on Kodibuntu yet. While Kodi is written in Python and C+, Kodibuntu is strictly Linux based. They are extremely similar, and the only difference in their name is the ‘buntu’ ending. This comes from it being Ubuntu based. If you are unfamiliar with Ubuntu, I will explain later.
This article will explain to you everything you need to know when it comes to using this software. What exactly it is, how to install it, and what to use it for, are all questions that will be answered. Whether you have heard of Kodibuntu before and want to try it, or you have never heard the name before, read on for great information.

What is Ubuntu?
To start with understanding Kodibuntu, you have to start with understanding Ubuntu. In the intro, I explained the basics of Kodi but didn’t touch on Ubuntu yet. Just like Kodi, it is open source, which I explained up above. It is developed by Debian, which is nicknamed ‘the universal operating system’. It has been called fairly easy to use and user-friendly, so it is highly recommended for beginners.
It is also by far the most popular Linux desktop distributions out on the market. To simplify it, users use this software instead of what comes as default on their operating systems, such as Windows or iOS. Why would people rather use Ubuntu than the ever popular Windows or iOS? Well, there are several advantages.
There are several things that can be done easier than on your default operating system. I won’t get into the details here, as this article is more focused on Kodibuntu. But if you are curious about these differences, read 7 Things That Are Easier to Do in Ubuntu Than in Windows, from a great computer blog, Make Use Of.
So, why doesn’t everyone use Ubuntu if it is called much easier than Windows by most users? Well, that is because of familiarity. Your average PC user may be comfortable with Windows, as they have been using it for years and know all of the nuances and tricks to it. They start to use Ubuntu and it is like a foreign language they have never even hear. If you switch to Ubuntu, it may take some time to learn it and become familiar with it. But once you do, you may find that you actually prefer the software.
Now that you have some good basic knowledge of Ubuntu, let’s start to dive into what you can here for, to learn about Kodibuntu.
If you want to install Kodibuntu on your operating system, you must first make sure that it is compatible. Here is a list of all of the hardware supported by it. Note that it is not only compatible with newer software and operating systems, but much older ones as well. About a decade spans the time between the oldest and newest software. What Is Kodibuntu?
Kodibuntu is similar to Kodi, except that it is Linux based. There isn’t really a huge difference when it comes to features available, it is just different in how the code and software are written. So, why would anyone use it instead of the more popular Kodi? Well, the answer is simple. As you can see the above list on all of the supported hardware available, there are operating systems supported on there that are over ten years old, like the Windows Vista.
As you can see the above list on all of the supported hardware available, there are operating systems supported on there that are over ten years old, like the Windows Vista. Therefore, Kodibuntu is most commonly used on old, PC computers because most new software released now is not compatible with this older operating system. Therefore, without Kodibuntu, these older PC’s will be practically useless as they won’t be able to access some of the best features of the internet in regards to multimedia.
The display of Kodibuntu will look the same on every operating system you use, and as it is an open-source, coders and experienced computer programmers are always tweaking it to ensure it has the best performance.
How To Install
Installing this software is a basic process, but requires several steps and can take a little bit of time. Don’t worry, it is not complicated, but be patient with it, especially if you are using an older computer model. Luckily for you, we already have some great articles here on how to install this software.

How and What to Use it For
So now what everyone wants to know. I mean, what’s the point of knowing all of the technical features and how to install if you don’t even know how to use it correctly. After installing it and using the above articles for reference, you are able to launch Kodibuntu.
To start Kodibuntu, you will want to first enter into desktop mode. This is essentially the home page of it, where you will be able to access many of the features available.
Now that you know how to access it, what exactly are the benefits? A big one that stands out is the customizability of this system There are many add-ons that extend the functionality of your media center. The media center also acts like a cloud, which is huge because many older systems don’t have that ability. In my opinion, the media center is easier, more intuitive, and more user-friendly than many other file sharing services.
Some things you can do with this media center include streaming content from your phone, tablet or PC directly to the media center. This is great, as you this is hard to do on most current operating systems. You can also easily access your DropBox account and display files from it as well. You are also able to browse Facebook and most other social media content at a much higher speed than normal. Another unique feature is that many old retro games come installed with the Kodibuntu, meaning you can play classics such as ‘Super Mario Bros’ or ‘Pac-man’ with ease. Finally, if you use it on an Apple TV, using Kodibuntu will essentially turn any TV hooked up into a smart TV. This is nice if you have an older TV without Internet connection, as downloading the software is once again free and easy to use.
Kodibuntu is a great, free all-purpose multimedia center for whatever operating system you use. It is perfectly designed for people with much older operating systems, who still want to be able to access modern multimedia content with ease. It is great for streaming movies and TV shows on sites such as Hulu or Netflix, downloading music and podcasts from places like iTunes, and also for accessing about every other feature the Internet has to offer.
Unless you are an experienced programmer, I wouldn’t recommend downloading the software if you have a newer operating system. This is because there aren’t really any easy to use features that are better than your default system. There are some benefits, which I linked to an article earlier that Kodibuntu has over some modern operating systems, but they are much more difficult to utilize. The features I listed in this article can be used by anyone with a basic knowledge of computer skills, and will greatly improve an older PC that is simply just collecting dust in the basement.
If reading this article has made you want to download Kodibuntu, then you can do so easily here. Even if you aren’t planning on downloading this system or have no need, I’m sure you still learned a great deal about this software, which will only help you with your technical computer skills.
If you have some other great knowledge about his software that I forgot to mention, leave a comment below to add to the article.
