We’re all wondering when Patapon 4 will be released, when the release date is, and how to get our hands on it. Patapon is a popular video game series with three installments that was designed and published only for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). You may have forgotten about this console and that it even existed, and don’t worry I did too. It was immensely popular for several years when handheld gaming devices were the new thing, competing primarily with the Nintendo DS. However, the rise of smartphone and tablet devices quickly infiltrated that market and ultimately lead to their demise; the PSP was discontinued in 2015.
Although the only platform that Patapon was on is now long gone, many fans want another sequel, which would be the fourth in this series. As it was only previously released on a handheld device, many hope that Sony, the publishers of the game, would release the new installment on a next gen console, probably the PS4 as that is what they make.
Please note that before you get into this article, this is purely rumors and speculations of a Patapon 4 being released, similar to the article I previously wrote on a potential Max Payne 4. I repeat, there has been no official news from the creators about this game being released at all. There has been, however, a lot of talking about how this may be a thing, as many fans of this franchise have been hoping for a while.
The article’s purpose is more about informing others about this great franchise that many newer gamers don’t know about. That is the best thing gamers who are hoping for another one can do at this point. Try to spread the word on it and get more people talking about it because if more people demand it, there’s only a greater chance of it being released. Even if you did play it at its peak, it will still be nice to reminisce about the good times of playing. All that being said, let’s just jump into it.
Summary of Patapon
I haven’t discussed the one question most of you may be asking; what exactly is Patapon? Well, to start off, the name actually comes from two Japanese words, pata (marching) and pon (drumming). So marching drumming is what the title means? Obviously the translation is a little off, but the essence of the game is still there. It is what is referred to as a rhythm game, and while there hasn’t been many released in this genre recently, they were very popular 5-10 years ago. There was 3-5 year span where music games, in general, were all the rave, with popularity soaring from Guitar Hero, Rockband, and many others alike.
The picture above shows you what the characters look like in the game, as they are simply drawn cartoonish in a 2-D environment without much detail. The main premise of the game is that user plays as the leader of these creatures and commands them by beating traditional drum beats. Each button on the controller represents a different drum, and there are tons of combinations you can use to create your own unique rhythms. For a basic list of controls for these beats, check out this article. That may seem simple, just standing in front of a large crowd and making beats, but there is a story behind it and mission you need to complete. I won’t get into the details of all the stories as that would take a lot of time, but if you are interested in that I would suggest reading this article, which has a detailed and accurate description of the plot for the three games.
Series So Far
As you may have guessed, there have been three Patapon’s released so far, with each only being available on the PSP. The time frame that these games were released perfectly illustrates when the popularity of the music video games were at their peak. The first one was released worldwide in early 2008, the second in 2009, and the third in 2011. As far as the differences between the sequels go, they remained very similar. The story from each one just picks up from where the last one ended, like a true sequel. The graphics and design never really changed and the gameplay was also noted for being very similar. The biggest difference was that the first game was only single player, and the second added a multiplayer mode as well, with the third having an even greater emphasis on multiplayer and co-op modes.
The third was the last installment for a couple reasons. The first and one I already alluded to was the fact that there just wasn’t a high demand for this genre. Add that to the demise of handheld gaming consoles with smartphones as well as the third one getting the worst reviews, and it’s no wonder why the third has been the last released so far. But, is there hope for a fourth one being released soon, even though it’s been six years since the last? Read the next section to find out.
Any speculation or news of a Patapon 4 being released has strictly been from gaming communities and forums. Many people think it is only inevitable that Sony does this, as the demand is high and releasing it on a next gen console could turn huge profits. Looking at the studio who actually designs the games, SIE Japan Studio, and they have a pretty full plate this year. They have already released one game in early 2017, and they plan to release four more this year and another one in 2018. Now, this isn’t unusual for them, as they usually pump out several new games each year, but they also usually release information at least a year in advance before releasing a game. They would probably do even longer than that with Patapon 4, as it would be a smash hit and they’d want people to get excited and hyped.
So, there hasn’t been any discussions by any party involved, in creating a brand new Patapon 4. That may be disheartening for die-hard fans to hear, but wait, I have some good news. In December of 2016, Sony announced that the original game would be remastered for PS4!
Now, this may not be exactly what the community wanted, but it is by far the next best thing. The biggest reason why people wanted a new game in the series was that so they could finally play it on a major console, and a next gen one at that. Sure, they would’ve liked a new story, but you can tell that Sony is definitely listening to the community. I think that this is a very smart business decision for them for two reasons. The first being that remastering a game is relatively simple and doesn’t take nearly as much time as creating an entirely new game. They don’t need to write a new story or new controls, they simply just have to input it into the PS4.
The second reason is that I can see why they are a little hesitant to release a brand new one. It takes much more time, money and resources, and who really knows if the market is still there. Sure, there are people on the Internet hoping for it, but a business can’t make a decision off of that. They have to look at the big picture, which is this. The game was only ever released on a handheld device, so will that success translate to the big time console, or will it flop? Also, the game hasn’t been released in nearly seven years, so will people still be interested in it? The newer gamers who make up a lot of the industry may not have even heard of it. I think the biggest reason they are skeptical is how that genre of games fell from grace so quickly. One year, all of the music games were the new best thing, and within a year or two, they pretty much vanished, as the demand just wasn’t there anymore. Basically, Sony just isn’t confident that the demand is there, so I think this remastered version is their test run. All in all, if it does well with gamers and critics, both in sales and reviews, I think that they would be very inclined to create a 4th edition, possibly as early as 2018.
Patapon is a music video game series with two sequels that were all released between 2008-2011. Although it has been years since the last one, many fans of this series are hoping that a fourth edition is released soon, as there hasn’t been a version released on a next gen console. However, there has been no news related to this at all, only rumors and hope from gamers on forums.
If you do like this series, there is good news, as a remastered version will be released sometime in late 2017 for the PS4. I hope you enjoyed this article, whether you are a fan of this series, or if you had never heard about it, but learned about it and maybe will try to play it soon.
