Can you name the wildly popular chat app that lets you communicate with your friends in text or video? The one that can connect you with sere than half a billion users in its domestic market alone? That pays bills, calls for a cab, and lets you find new friends with a shake? WeChat is that app. It caught fire in its domestic market (China) and is quickly launching into the rest of the world. As WeChat grows and evolves, its developers are giving its users increasing access across a variety of platforms. WeChat is available on mobile devices, for your PC or Mac, as well as on the web. Today, we will look at the WeChat online login for PC and Mac.
What is WeChat?
“A CD. How quaint. We have these in museums.”
WeChat was launched in 2011 as a stand-alone chat app. In its domestic market alone, WeChat attracted 300 million users in its first two years. In just the past year, WeChat’s users have increased from 549 million in early 2015 to at least 700 million in March 2016, according to the most recent data available. The potential for WeChat is so strong that Forbes has dubbed it, “one of the world’s most powerful apps.”
In China, the app is called Weixin, which means ‘micro message’ in Chinese. Beginning as just that – a way to send little messages – WeChat has added numerous features over the years as its loyal base of users continues to grow. All users have the Discover and Moments features, while domestic users can send gifts, hail a cab, make a doctor appointment, and even pay utility bills over WeChat. This has made WeChat into a form of social media in itself. Plus, it interfaces with other forms of social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, which has added to its growth and popularity among users.
Like other mobile messaging apps, the team behind WeChat recognizes the ways smartphone are increasingly integrated with our lives. WeChat went global in April 2012 and continues its expansion into the rest of the world. It is most popular on mobile devices, with versions of its app available or both Android and iPhone, but the developers at WeChat realized people will sometimes want to connect at home or work from a computer.
Designed for Mobile Messaging
WeChat on the web makes this easy. However, since WeChat is designed and intended first and foremost as a mobile communications app, you can only use the web version if WeChat is already installed on your tablet or smartphone.
If you do not have WeChat on your mobile device just yet, you can find it at Google Play or the Apple Store. It is totally free and it installs quickly and easily. Open the app and, if you do not have a WeChat account, creating one is a breeze. The app guides you cleanly through it.
Once you have your WeChat account and the app is open on your device, go to your PC or Mac, open a web browser, and go https://web.wechat.com, where you will be greeted by a login QR code. This security measure makes certain you have access to the same account and data on the web as you have on your smartphone.
Login on the Web
To begin the Web WeChat login process, you will use your phone WeChat app to scan the online QR code in your browser. To do this, go to your options menu (the + sign in the top corner) and select Scan QR Code. The outline of a square appears on the screen. Hold this up to the QR code on your PC or Mac web browser, centering the code within the outline on your phone or tablet. You will get a beep of approval, and then a request to Confirm login to Web WeChat. Click the login bar on your mobile device to continue.
Now, back at your computer monitor, you have confirmation that your login was successful. You may begin to use WeChat on the web.
In the future, when you want to go online with WeChat from your computer, just remember these steps:
- You must have the WeChat app installed on your smartphone or other mobile devices. You can find it at Google Play or the Apple Store.
- On your Mac or PC, open a browser and go to https://web.wechat.com.
- Open WeChat on your mobile device.
- Open the menu (the + sign at the top of your screen).
- Select Scan QR Code. A square outline appears.
- Center the square outline over the QR code login on your computer monitor.
- You will hear and see a response on your phone when the code is received.
- On your phone, click the bar to Confirm login to Web WeChat.
- Return to your computer’s monitor screen to see a welcome and then the Web WeChat screen, ready to use.
More About Web WeChat
The web version of WeChat is perfect for those longer messages we sometimes want to send. This is especially true for those of us who are far more familiar with a full-size keyboard. It also provides a larger user interface for those who want to chat but have trouble using the small screen on a mobile phone.
As discussed before, since the developers of WeChat designed the app to be a mobile communications messaging service, the focus is on mobile development with the web version added for convenience as needed. The web version, then, has only the bare bones features of the original WeChat app. You can chat with people using their phone or tablet version of WeChat, but most other mobile features like Moments and Discover are not available on the web.
That doesn’t mean the benefits of these features are denied web users, especially in regard to the WeChat Discover features. In case you are unfamiliar with the app’s ways to Discover new contacts, we will take a quick look at them here.
Contact and Discover
First, be sure you have used the features in the Contact tab (tabs are at the bottom of the WeChat screen) to reach out to friends, family, and associates in your current social realm. WeChat makes this easy. The app will download your mobile address book into your contact list, look for those already using WeChat, and (at your option) send an invitation to those who do not yet have an account on the app. These invitations will go out by text, email, Facebook or Twitter, as you choose to send them.
Then, if you’re up for it (and who isn’t?), you can make new friends using features in the Discover tab.
One way to Discover soon-to-be friends is by using People Nearby. After answering a few simple questions telling WeChat what’s up right now (“looking to chat a bit”), whether you are male or female, and your basic geographic region, you are shown users geographically near you that are not currently in your contact list. You will see their greeting and how far they are from you right now. This is totally anonymous and the new person cannot add you to their list without your permission.
Feeling a bit more adventurous? Shake it up! WeChat’s Shake lets you meet people from all over the world who are shaking their device at the same time you are, also hoping to meet someone new. People you find in Shake are anonymous and cannot add you to their list without your permission.
Whatever way you choose to use to add to your WeChat contact list, all of those people will be available when you use Web WeChat. Every time you use your mobile device to scan the online login code, your updated contact list and chat records will sync with your web interface. Whether the people in your social network are using Web WeChat as you are or on their tablet or smartphone, you can exchange text messages with them online from your computer.
