The 10 Best Wireless Routers To Buy In 2017

Let’s be honest; the Internet kind of rules our way of life. We wake up in the morning and check the news on our phones, go to work and use the GPS on our phone to avoid traffic, and at work or school it is a necessity. To punish our kids for doing something we take the Internet and devices away from them. Because of that it is vital that we have WiFi or the Internet at home so we don’t murder our data plan. Check out this article to see some of the best wireless routers.

One of the wonderful things about Internet is it’s like like a salon. It brings people together from different intellectual walks of life- Eric Kandel

The Best Wireless Routers

Let’s go over some of the best wireless routers you can find on Amazon. The prices will range, so make sure you check them out.

Google WiFi System- Perfect for a larger houses with lots of devices

You can check out, and buy, this wireless router from Amazon here.

Features:

  • Comes with 3 different units to plug into outlets around your house
  • Can download an app for your phone to help connect and manage easier
  • Doesn’t have to be connected by an Ethernet cord
  • 3 units cost less than $265
  • Comes with:
    • 3 units
    • Power cords

I will start off by saying that you can also opt to buy this with only one unit, as opposed to three. One of these pods will cover 1,500 square feet in your home, so obviously three covers 4,500 square feet. So if you have a larger or multi-story home you will want to get more than one pod.

Now onto the review. If you ever have any issues with WiFi connectivity, or get spotty signal or drops, this is definitely something you need to look into. We all know the name Google, and you probably know that Google’s products are great to have and this wireless router is no exception to that idea. You may look at the price of it and get mad or whatever, but it is actually pretty reasonable. This Google WiFi unit can handle speeds of up to 2 Gigabit and constantly stays connected to the Internet so your devices can stay connected.

Another great feature about this wireless router is that it can all be set up via an app on your phone, so you have true control of your WiFi. You can set passwords, set priorities, and connect different devices to the WiFi all from that one app. There is also an option to set up a guest network via the app, so your guests can all log onto that network.

My Rating:

I am actually a pretty big fan of these Google WiFi units. They provide a pretty big WiFi radius, and have great connectivity to all your devices. These Google systems have great reviews on Amazon with almost 2,000 different user reviews, so if you are unsure you can simply read the reviews of what people had to say about the units. I give this wireless router a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars, and highly recommend people (who have money to spend) to check it out. It might be a little pricey, but you can be assured that you will have a reliable signal.

Netgear Nighthawk AC1750- Powerful and speedy for streamers

You can check out, and purchase, this wireless router on Amazon (here) for less than $100.

Features:

  • Great for homes with 12 or more devices
  • Includes beamforming:
    • Definition- An access point that uses different antennas to give the same signal, basically allows for the best WiFi connection possible
  • Can download an app
  • Has a USB 3 port
  • Comes with:
    • Router
    • Antennas
    • Ethernet cable
    • Power cord

Impression:

This router is fast, like super fast. This Netgear router is what is called a “tri-band router”, basically meaning that this router has the power of 3 routers combined. It can handle more devices and has way more speed than a traditional router. This router is perfect for gamers, streaming video, and everything else in between. The range on this is also very impressive and can cover a decently large home easily. This has 4 ethernet ports and 2 USB ports for storage.

Netgear also has an app you can install on your phone, or other device, where you can keep track of your router. You can:

  • Check out internet status
  • See every device connected to the WiFi
  • Receive technical support
  • And update software for your router

What is the point of having USB ports?

You might be wondering why you would need to have USB ports on your wireless router, but their function is actually pretty nifty. To share files and media between devices on the same network you can plug in a hard drive or USB drive into the router and it allows you to access those files on your devices connected to that WiFi. Pretty nifty, right? Another thing you can do is plug a printer into the USB port and all the devices connected to that network can use that printer. Basically anything you plug into the USB ports can be shared throughout all the devices on that network.

My Rating:

I really am a huge fan of this router. It has almost 17,000 reviews and has high ratings on Amazon. If you run into issues where your WiFi signal cuts out a lot, then do yourself a favor and at least check this Netgear router out. I think the price is pretty fair, coming in at under $100. This wireless router deserves a solid 4 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend getting this baby if you are a heavy streamer and gamer.

TP-Link AC1900 Long Range Wireless WiFi Router- Affordable and great

You can check out this wireless router on Amazon here for less than $110.

Features:

  • Detachable antennas
  • Dual band connection
  • Has 2 USB ports
    • One USB3
    • One USB 2
  • Beamforming
  • Has an app called Tether

Impression:

This particular router boasts the title of “Amazon’s choice for essential WiFi router”, which is really quite the feat considering how many routers are on Amazon. This router allows multiple devices the ability to stream and use the internet at the same time, which is great since most homes have a lot of wireless devices. This also features 2 USB ports, so you can share media between all your devices. As with just about all of the routers on this page, this also has an app you can download to control your internet settings.

Some people may not recognize the brand of this TP-Link, but do not let that deter you from actually giving it a chance. This router is super fast and allows you to not rage while waiting for webpages to load. I am an internet addict, I stream videos, game on my phone, and write articles for y’all at the same time and this router was able to keep up with my every demand. To me, the best thing about this router is the price though. There is an old saying “you get what you pay for”, but this router does not apply. Finding a great router can set up back to well over $300, but this bad boy comes in just over $100, making it ultra affordable for most folks.

My Rating:

The reviews on this baby are pretty damn good, it has almost 11,500 total reviews so you can get a feel for just how many people have purchased this router (if you don’t trust me, that is). You also really cannot beat the price, coming in at just under $110. And any product that gets Amazon’s seal of approval is pretty good in my book. It comes in at an unbeatable price, and you really cannot beat the performance this wireless router gives. Therefore, I give this a well deserved 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it for anyone who uses the internet.

Netgear Orbi Home WiFi System: AC3000 Tri Band- Great for LARGE homes

You can purchase this wireless router on Amazon here.

Features:

  • Can cover 5000 square feet
  • Tri-band
  • Features a guest network
  • Can get the Orbi app for your mobile device
  • Can buy “satellite” units to expand your WiFi coverage

Note:

I will start this off by saying this whole-home WiFi system is not cheap, coming in at just under $350. What is being reviewed is the 2-pack bundle, but there are other bundles you can get, so pay attention to the Amazon page.

Impression:

Now getting onto the review: this is a great home router system. It covers a massive area, so those of y’all with larger homes will be completely covered corner to corner. If you aren’t covered, you can purchase extra satellite units (can be found here) to expand your WiFi coverage, but those units are not cheap either. Keep in mind that we are reviewing the 2 pack, so it already comes with one satellite unit, so don’t purchase an extra satellite if you don’t need to.

One really cool, and unique, thing about this system is that it is Amazon Alexa/Echo compatible, so you can use voice commands to control your entire internet network in your home. There is also an app, no surprise there, that you can also use to set up your network. Many people have reported issues when they go to register their units, but we never experienced any issues for setup whatsoever. In fact, this is one of the easiest network setups we have done. It is almost as simple as plug and play, and we were surfing the internet within minutes.

My Rating:

I do like this WiFi system, but the cost is pretty high. Therefore, the people who this appeals to are probably a little better off financially, so this is not meant for a broke college student or a family with a smaller home. If you are interested in purchasing just one unit, you will still be paying close to $200, so decide if it is something you need for your home. This wireless router deserves a 4.5 out of 5 stars, and is great for those with larger homes.

Asus RT-AC88U Wireless AC3100 Dual Band Gigabit Router- Perfect for gamers and streamers

You can purchase this Asus router on Amazon here.

Features:

  • 1024 QAM technology
  • Has a lot (8) Ethernet ports to hook into, as well as 2 different WiFi bands
  • Can get Asus router app on your mobile device
  • 2 USB ports
  • Comes with:
    • Router
    • 4 antennas (detachable)
    • Power cord
    • Installation CD

Impression:

This is quite possibly the best router for gamers. It has multiple Ethernet ports that you can plug your computer into to get super fast, and reliable internet. Of course, since it is 2017 AND this article is all about wireless routers, the WiFi on this beauty is great. This router is fast, and I mean super fast, like it will go to the webpage you want before you actually go to it (okay maybe not, but you get the point). The speeds all your devices will be getting is exceptional, and you really shouldn’t be experiencing any connectivity problems.

Gamers will, of course, know the name Asus and will recognize this router as having a similar look to Asus’ ROG computer series. Typically, when gaming, you will want to connect your gaming rig (or console) to the router with an Ethernet cord and this router has you covered with a total of 8 Ethernet ports, so you won’t run out of ports for your gaming needs. That being said, the WiFi is good enough on this that you could very easily get away with just connecting your rig to the WiFi, but I honestly don’t see many hardcore gamers doing that unless they have to.

Now the price tag will sting a little bit, coming in at just under $270 on Amazon. But this router does fit the whole “get what you pay for” idea, so this isn’t a crappy thing that we die on you within a few months.

My Rating:

This really is a great router for gamers and streamers. You plenty of connection options and the speed this baby can produce is great. It is spendy, but you really do get a great router for the price. I can’t stress this enough, but if you are a gamer this router is perfect for you; you can choose between connecting via Ethernet or WiFi, and the speeds and reliability are great. Because this may not appeal to the average person, I will give this a 4 out of 5 stars, but gamers will give it a 5 out of 5 stars.

Asus RT-3200 Wireless- Basic router for everyday needs

You can get this wireless Asus router from Amazon here.

Features:

  • 2 USB ports (one USB 3 port and one USB 2 port)
  • 30 second setup
  • Tri-band
  • Comes with Asus AiCloud 2.0 to store files and media
  • Comes with:
    • Router
    • 6 antennas (detachable)
    • Power cord
    • Support CD

Impression:

This is another great router from Asus that is more for the average user, as opposed to a hardcore gamer or streamer. This router is fast, and the range is great, but it cannot support too many devices (maybe 10 to 12 at most). With the tri-band signal, your devices will automatically connect to the best possible WiFi signal, so you know your devices are always connected with no internet lag. You can get this router for less than $200 on Amazon, making this router a decent price (for a router, that is). Asus markets this as breaking LAN speed records, which means the internet is super fast and is not bottle necked.

As with the other routers, you can can download the Asus router app to monitor and control your WiFi. What I like about this app is that you can get info on the network traffic. With that you can see who is on the most and just keep track of your network. Installation is VERY simple and quick, though I don’t know if it is truly a 30 second process like Asus claims. I am a huge fan of the way you can set priorities on devices. So, for example, you can set a specific device (like a laptop) as a higher priority than another device (like a Kindle or something) so the item with the higher priority gets the internet if there are any issues.

Note:

While I never noticed any range issues, many reviewers did have a problem with the range. Range depends on the size of your home, and even your homes walls. Always keep your router in the center of your house, and sometimes you might need to use a WiFi range extender depending on your homes’ size.

Some people have the internet disconnect from their devices, however there are settings that can be easily changed if that happens to you.

My Rating:

I will be honest in saying this is not my favorite router on this list, but it certainly isn’t the worst router I’ve seen. While the price is decent for a good router, it is still pretty expensive, so do some research if you still aren’t sure about getting it or not. I honestly would find another router that fits me better, but I have multiple devices and game and stream quite a bit. I will give this router a 4 out of 5 stars.

Linksys WRT AC3200 Open Source Dual-Band- Traverse the internet with lightning fast speeds

You can check this beast out on Amazon here.

Features:

  • Has Mu-Mimo technology for super fast internet speeds on different devices all at once
  • Open source (totally customizable)
  • Smart WiFi app for your mobile device
  • 256 MB flash storage and 512 MB of RAM which allows super fast data transfer speeds
  • Features Tri-stream, meaning super fast speeds with no internet lag

Impression:

This is one hell of a fast router, and is quite possibly one of the fastest routers featured on this list. Linksys packed quite a bit of hardware and technology into this router to deliver and ultra fast router that can connect to multiple devices at once. Mu-Mimo technology basically allows for multiple devices to be connected and used simultaneously, with each having super fast speeds. This is great for families with a crap ton of devices that you use often. So, someone can stream Twitch of YouTube videos while another person games online, while someone else streams Pandora, and not a single person has internet speeds drop. Tri-Stream technology the internet speeds don’t lag and allows for heavy internet usage.

This router is also the first on our list to have open source capabilities. what that means, in basic terms, is that you can modify your router and WiFi to fit your individual needs. You can go online and download programs and files that modify your router into something that is a little more custom to you. Now this is really only handy for people who have those skills to do so (and I am certainly not one of those people). Even if you don’t know how to modify it just yet, Linksys still provides you with that option to learn to make your internet and WiFi work for you best. There is also an app you can get on your phone that allows you to further customize and set up your WiFi to fit your best.

Taking all those features into account, the price tag on this is great. You will spend just under $210, which is fair for what you get and how much it will improve your internet situation at your home.

My Rating:

This is one of my favorite routers on this list. It is super fast and can handle many devices at once. Linksys is a very popular and big name in routers and networking, and they make quality products. The reviews are also great on this product on Amazon, and many folks recommend it. I think this wireless router deserves a solid 5 out of 5 stars and will work great for anyone who wants good speeds on their wireless devices.

Google WiFi Router OnHub AC1900- Perfect for average homes with lots of devices

You can get this beautiful router on Amazon here.

Features:

  • Fast network speeds
  • Can support over 100 connected devices
  • Has guest network
  • Multiple antennas eliminate dead spots in your home

Impression:

This is actually the predecessor to the Google WiFi System (which is the first product on this list), so the system is a bit old, but it still works great. Google does still support this product (as of August 2017), so you don’t have to worry about that. This delivers very fast speeds, and is very easy to set up. Set up is very simple, and can be done with the Google On app. Google markets this router as being able to connect to over 100 devices, but I personally don’t have that many devices to even attempt to test that claim out.

Now this router is not for everyone. It has only one Ethernet port, which is frustrating if you need to have more than one thing actually wired in. It also does not seem to handle streaming as well as some of the other routers on here, so heavy streamers will probably get frustrated because the streaming speeds are not super great. For an average user who doesn’t need Ethernet ports and who doesn’t stream from different devices at once, this will be a perfect router for you.

With all that being said, the range on this router is very impressive. This is rated at 2,500 square feet, which is really quite the radius. This should very easily cover your entire home, but just make sure you put it in a central location.

My Rating:

This Google router is perfect for an average user who owns quite a few devices. If you are a heavier internet user you might want to go with a different router, but this really is great for average users. I can’t stress that enough, and the price is very fair, coming in at just under $125. I will give this router a 4.5 out of 5 stars, purely because it really isn’t for everyone and only has one Ethernet port.

Linksys AC1900 Dual Band Router- Is it the best router of 2017? Maybe!

You can get this top rated router on Amazon here.

Features:

  • Can be tied into Amazon Alexa and Echo
  • Uses Mu-Mino
  • Can stream 4K
  • 3 antennas

Impression:

This is a very high rated router, and has been named as the best router for 2017 by multiple different review websites. This can handle 12 devices simultaneously, thanks to its Mu-Mimo technology. It is rated to handle speeds up to 2 Gb, which should be more than enough for most folks out there. This router has 4 Ethernet ports, so you can still connect devices via Ethernet, which is more than some other routers have.

This also features Linksys’ app, Smart Wi-Fi, which allows you to manage and set up your wireless network very easily from your phone. This router can also pair with Alexa, so your network can be commanded by your voice, which is pretty damn awesome.

My Rating:

This router really does live up to the hype of being the best router of 2017. It can handle a lot of devices at once, and can be very easily set up and managed. The range on this baby is also very good, so your whole house should be very easily covered. This router very easily scores a 5 out of 5 stars, and we highly recommend this router to anyone who uses the internet.

D-Link AC2600 Mu-Mimo WiFi Router- Great for high definition streaming

You can get the final router on our list on Amazon here.

Features:

  • 4K streaming capable
  • 4 Ethernet ports
  • Dual core processor gives high speeds
  • Mu-Mimo technology
  • Smart beam tracking
  • 2 USB ports

Impression:

This is truly a very versatile and high speed router that can fit most people’s needs. With this you can stream in either HD or 4K, which is great because the speeds don’t drop or lag behind. Gaming is also great on this router, you won’t experience any lag or random internet drops, which can lead to some serious rage. There are 2 USB ports so you can transfer data easily, just like most of the other routers on this list.

My Rating:

This is a great router for anyone who streams a lot, or for anyone who wants some faster speeds from their router. Obviously your speeds will be hindered by your devices and your ISP, but nonetheless your speeds will be fast and you can do more things on more devices. The router is very easy to set up, and is easy to connect your devices to. I think this router deserves a 4 out of 5 stars.

All About Routers

Now that we have gone over some of the best wireless routers on Amazon, we should go over the things you should know about routers.

What to consider when getting a router

There are actually many things you need to take into account before you purchase a wireless router. Lets go over them:

1) Speed rating

When buying a wireless router you need to buy a router that is best for the speed you pay for from your ISP (Internet service provider). For instance if you get 1 GB speed then you don’t want to buy a router that tops out at only 30 MB of speed. On the other hand, you don’t want to buy a router that can give 3 GB of speed if you only pay for 30 MB. So pay attention to what speed you are paying for (obviously) and look for routers that can handle that speed. All the routers on this list can handle over 1 GB.

2) Your ISP provided router

Most, if not all, internet service providers provide you with a router that you can rent. Now, these routers will be functional, but are very far from perfect. You can choose to either rent the router, or simply buy your own. Now, most times buying your own router will eventually pay for itself, but if you swap ISP’s often or plan on moving, then you might want to rent a router for a few months.

3) Range

This idea is similar to the speed part; you need to make sure the router you are looking at has a range that will cover your whole home. Now this is something that seems obvious, but a lot of people do not get routers that can actually cover their entire home. Routers will say what they are rated for, so make sure that you get one that has a radius that your house fits into that radius.

4) Price

Now this seems like another obvious thing, but pay attention to the price. You obviously don’t want to overpay for something, but do not buy a cheap router either. A super cheap router will be utter crap; no speed, no range, and maybe 1 device can connect to it. On that same hand a super expensive router may not be any better than one in the best price range. Now, just what is the best price range? Depends on the speed your ISP provides you, but you typically want to look at routers between $100 to $300. We had a few above $300 on this list, which they are still in the range but are just a little pricey.

5) Brand

Now everyone trusts different brands and prefers some over others, but there are some brands of routers that stick out over others. Let’s quickly go over some of the best router brands there are:

  • Netgear– this is a very well known brand that produces really great products. They are typically reliable are fairly priced
  • Linksys– They are easily one of the most well known, and trusted, companies that produce routers. They often include tri-stream technology in their routers, which speeds up the internet significantly
  • Google– Now we all know, and most of us love Google for their search engine, but their tech products are excellent. Their routers are no exception; they are reliable, easy to set up, and connect to your devices easily.
  • Asus– Asus is extremely well known for their computers and products, and their routers are at the same quality as their other products. They’re quick and can cover a large area.

Ultimately you should go with the brand you trust, that has great reviews, and it never hurts to have different products from the same company.

6) Ratings and reviews

One of the most important things to do when making a tech purchase is to research it thoroughly first. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on something you know nothing about, so it is imperative you research and read user reviews on the product. User reviews can give you a pretty good idea of what average users think about the product, while a little more professional reviews go into the specs and why those specs work (or not work sometimes).

7) Usage

Another extremely important thing to look at when buying a router is to take into consideration what you do most on the internet. Do you game online a lot? Do you stream Netflix or YouTube? Do you just surf the web? You need to take into account how much strain you will put on your router, and then choose one that is meant for what you do. We have included many different routers that are great for streaming, gaming, and regular surfing.

8) Life Span

Some routers can hang in there for a few years, others… not so much. Just because you bought a router a year ago doesn’t mean it will provide great internet. Keep in mind that technology changes almost daily, and your router is under quite a bit of stress on a daily basis. So if your once great router is kinda crappy now, it might be time for a new one.

Tips for setting up a router

We decided to end this article by giving y’all a few tips on setting up your router. Now these aren’t the instructions for your router set up, but these are more general tricks and tips. Always remember to check out Tech Review Source for more reviews and articles!

  1. Always place your router in the center most part of your home, but close enough to your modem that you can still connect the wiring
    1. Walls will block your signal, so you might need to buy extenders if there are lots of walls or if you have a multi-story home
  2. If you are a gamer, always try to use an Ethernet cord on your “rig” (PC or console)
    1. This will give you the best connection with very little lag or disconnects
  3. When the connection drops do a hard reset. Here’s how:
    1. Unplug both the router and modem from the back of the device
    2. Wait around 30 seconds or so, then plug in the MODEM first
    3. After all the lights come on and stop blinking plug in your router
    4. Once that stops blinking you can use the internet again
  4. Always set up a password on your router
    1. Most routers have a process you should follow to set up a password to protect your network
    2. You really should set one up because neighbors can otherwise use your internet for free, and can even access data
  5. If you feel like your internet is super slow, check out what the speed actually is by going to speedtest.net (here)
    1. This allows you to see if you are actually getting the speed you are paying for, and helps solidify your frustrations
    2. For example, my speed in a whopping 18 Mbs when I pay for 360 Mbs, so I can contact my ISP and ask why they suck
