A feast for the eyes and a feat for the mind, Candy Crush Saga is the most popular game on Facebook. Most of us first fell in love with the game there before moving it onto our smartphones and tablets. Today, we’re going to look at how to download Candy Crush Saga for PC.
When King delivered Candy Crush Saga to us via Facebook in April 2012, it was generally well received. By December of that year, there had been 10 million downloads. Less than a year later, in November 2013, more than 500 million copies of the app had been downloaded, and Eurogamer named it the Game of the Year for 2013. In 2016, it remains the most popular game on Facebook.
Candy Crush Saga is a freemium game, meaning it offers in-app purchases to help you advance quicker, but 97.7% of its players play for free.
We’re All Helping Tiffi
Most of us play because we enjoy matching the pretty candies. Even the explosions on Candy Crush Saga are beautiful, and nothing is finer than the “Sweet!” that flashes over the screen when you’ve done well. A lot of us don’t even realize there is a story in the game because we click “skip” when the narrator is telling it to us between episodes. We just want to get to the next level of play.
There is a story behind the game, however, and that is the story of Toffette, or Tiffi, as we know her. She has many problems to solve in the Candy Kingdom, for its residents are often plagued and perplexed. When you solve candy puzzles, you help Tiffi and her friends solve these problems.
While Tiffi outwits the Bubblegum Troll, you do battle with his smaller minions like the jellies, licorice, nougat, chocolate spinners, meringues three to five layers deep, cake bombs and other sweet yet hardened blockers. Candy is your weapon, and it comes in red, purple, green, yellow, orange and blue. Matching three identical candies in a row sets off explosions that help defeat the blockers. When you match more than three, you create candy bombs, wrapped candies, and other weapons that inflict more damage on the monstrous blockers when activated.
“Keep calm and Candy Crush…”
On one level, you are helping Tiffi fill orders for customers. One time you will be filling an order for 98 blue candies, 98 red candies, and 89 purple candies. The next order may be for 25 striped candies, which are harder to make because it takes four candies of the same color positioned just right to do it. Another time, the request may be for nuts and cherries, which you have to coerce down the candy path in just the right way to get them out for the customer.
Much of the time, your task is to clear a certain number of jellies on the game screen. Often these jelly patches are protected by coverings of meringue up to five layers deep, or cake bombs. Chocolate spinners spew chocolate over the jellies and over candies that can help you destroy the jellies.
The game is truly addictive. You may struggle for days, weeks on some levels, to defeat all the blockers before bombs go off destroying the playing field, and yet, once you finally beat them all and win the level, the reward is so “sweet” that you head immediately into the next one. You’re practically guaranteed to never run out of new challenges because there are more than 2,000 levels to play in more than 150 episodes of Candy Crush Saga.
Ways to Play
Before getting to how we can play it on our Windows PC, let’s make sure you know all the different ways we can play Candy Crush Saga so that you can take it with you wherever you go.
Play on Facebook
You can still play Candy Crush Saga on Facebook, where the game took on its social format. When your friends in Facebook play Candy Crush along with you, they can send you lives and free moves and you can return the same gifts to them. It is not as socially dependent as something like FarmVille 2 or Clash of Clans, but having friends playing the game with you lets you play longer because it is the only way to get free extra lives or extra moves. If you have a lot of friends playing the game when you run out of lives (energy) while playing, you can send out a request to friends for help and sometimes have gifts of free lives coming back to you in just a minute or two.
When you do not have many friends playing the game, and you have sent an invitation three or four times to everyone who is already a Facebook friend, you can go to the Candy Crush Saga app page to meet other players and form game friendships there.
Play on Smartphone or Tablet
Candy Crush Saga is available as an app for your smartphone or tablet at Google Play store, Amazon App store, Apple’s App store, and elsewhere. When you login or connect with Facebook before playing on the app, all of your friends come along to help you with extra lives and moves. Also, King sometimes offers special levels on the mobile versions that let you play for extra helps or boosts in the game.
Play on Windows 10 PC
The release of Candy Crush Saga for Windows PC is for Windows 10 only. Just like on your mobile device, if you login with Facebook all of your friends come along to help when you play on your home computer.
Play on Windows PC (versions < 10)
To download and play Candy Crush Saga on your home computer using Windows versions XP, Vista, 7, 8, or 8.1, you have to use the Android OS file and an Android emulator.
You’ve probably heard about Android emulators. Maybe you’ve used one. Not everyone has, though, so for those who are not familiar with these programs, I’ll take a minute to explain it.
An Android emulator is a software program that you download and install on your home computer. When you use it, the emulator makes a simulated Android OS platform on your Windows PC or Mac. This way, you can run an app designed for an Android device on your home computer.
- One that is totally free is Andy the Android emulator. Andy is among the most popular emulators out there…
- Second probably only to BlueStacks, the best known of the ones made for gaming apps.
Some of the emulators out there are slow with games because that’s not what they’re made to do. The first Android emulators were developed for app developers to use while testing out their Android apps. That way, a designer can test code on different versions of the Android OS and screen sized depending on the options that particular emulator has available.
Well, it didn’t take long for people to realize that you could take an Android emulator and use it to launch an app on your PC for the sake of using the app, not just for designing one. That’s when companies like the ones behind BlueStacks and Andy began to market their emulators primarily to people wanting to run the apps instead of developers.
So, as I told you, Andy is totally free to download and use. Since I mentioned BlueStacks, I will let you know that it is free for the trial period but after that, you either pay a $2 monthly subscription or are asked to download additional apps for promotional purposes.
After you download and install an emulator, you have to get the APK file for the Android app you want to run in it. In this case, you want the APK file for the most recent version of Candy Crush Saga.
Android OS APK File
Andy and BlueStacks will both interface with the Google Play store so that you can get your app’s APK file there using the same Google Play account that you use on your smartphone. That’s the safest way to go because the files at Google Play are always the authorized version directly from the developer of your app.
When you can’t use the Google Play store, either because you do not have a Google Play account connected to a smartphone or your emulator does not interface with Google Play, you have to download the APK file directly.
An APK file is nothing scary. If you were installing an app on your Windows PC, you would go get the EXE file, like “install.exe” for example. The APK file is the same thing but for an Android OS file and would be named “install.apk” instead.
For the Candy Crush Saga APK file for version 22.214.171.124 released June 28, 2016, you can try one of the following sites:
- APP Raw
- APK Pure
Once you have the APK file in your download folder, guide the Android emulator there when it is time to open the file. If you are using Andy or BlueStacks, you will probably find that your emulator is already designated as the associated program for any APK files in your download folder. Just double-click to open and start playing.
And that’s all there is to it. You can now run Candy Crush Saga for PC whether you use the download for Windows 10 or by using an Android emulator to download the app on earlier versions of Windows PC. Now let’s get to helping Tiffi save the Candy Kingdom!
